Gor Mahia FC, based in Nairobi, stands as Kenya’s most legendary football club, renowned for its rich history, passionate fan base, and exceptional achievements. Known locally as K’Ogalo (“descendant of Ogalo” in Dholuo), the club has claimed a record 21 Kenyan Premier League titles and secured 11 FKF President’s Cups. Internationally, Gor Mahia made history by winning Africa’s prestigious African Cup Winners’ Cup in 1987, becoming the only Kenyan team to lift a continental trophy, after reaching the final in 1979.
Founded officially on February 17, 1968, through the merger of Luo Union and Luo Sports Club (Luo Stars), Gor Mahia’s roots trace back to 1915. The club’s home matches are hosted at Nairobi City Stadium, Moi International Sports Centre, and Nyayo National Stadium. Throughout the 1970s and ’80s, Gor Mahia dominated Kenyan football with numerous league titles and cup victories. After a challenging period in the 1990s, including a low point in 1996 when the team finished 8th, Gor Mahia rebounded strongly, reclaiming its position as Kenya’s top football powerhouse.
The name “Gor Mahia” honors a legendary healer from Luo mythology, known for his mystical tricks—symbolizing the team’s deep cultural roots. While the club doesn’t have an official anthem, its vibrant colors represent Kenyan and Luo heritage, inspiring fans across generations.
